Burglary suspect hid in closet, police say

Suffolk police arrived at a burglary call early Thursday morning to find one of their suspects hiding in the closet pretending to be an abduction victim.

The incident occurred at the Quicky Mart in the 1300 block of East Washington Street about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Police received a burglar alarm and responded to the business, according to city spokeswoman Debbie George.

As they pulled up to the building, they observed one man running away and another man darting back into the business. They chased the man who ran away, but he managed to evade arrest at the time.

Inside the business, they located another man hiding in the closet, George said.

“He had a sock in his mouth and had attempted to tie his hands behind his back” in an apparent effort to make it appear he was an abduction victim rather than a suspect, George said.

“The sock wasn’t stuffed in his mouth,” George said. “It was just kind of hanging there. Police didn’t quite buy that story.”

Officers have arrested two adults and secured petitions against a juvenile in the burglary. The one who was found with the sock in his mouth was Abdul Dixon, 18, of the 100 block of North Eighth Street. Also arrested was Tyrell Mann, 18, of the 200 block of Central Avenue. The two are charged with burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary.

The store also had been the target of a burglary and attempted burglary earlier in the week, George said, but police do not yet know if the incidents were related.
