Suffolk teenager John David Sanderson advanced through one round but fell in the round of 16 on Thursday afternoon in the 98th Annual VSGA (Virginia State Golf Association) Amateur Championship at The Virginian Golf Club in Bristol.
Sanderson, whose home course is Cedar Point Country Club, scored a lopsided 5-and-4 win over Culpeper’s Chad Mozingo in Thursday morning’s match, the first round of the bracket after two stroke play rounds determined the top 32 players Tuesday and Wednesday.
With a birdie for a win on the par-four first hole, Sanderson took the lead and went wire-to-wire. Sanderson won Nos. 5 and 6 with pars for a 3-up lead.
Sanderson put the match away early thanks to winning No. 13, a 199-yard par three, with a par and winning No. 14 with a four for a birdie.
In a streak starting late in his first round of stroke play, then going through the 69 he recorded Wednesday and the 14 holes against Mozingo, Sanderson played 37 straight holes without a bogey or worse.
Sanderson faced Weston Eklund, a rising senior at Radford, in a wild match in the round of 16 with Eklund prevailing 2-and-1. Only five of the 17 holes were halved.
Sanderson rallied and gained a 1-up lead by winning the 454-yard par-four No. 9 with a par, followed by winning No. 10 with a birdie three.
Eklund answered with wins on Nos. 12 and 13. Sanderson birdied the par-five No. 14 to square the match. Eklund won the next two holes.
