A year after the business closed, the doors of the former Main Street Jazz Restaurant were open again Thursday.
But there were no diners, there was no soulful saxophone and there were no tinkling piano keys. The building’s owners, the commercial real estate firm GVA Advantis, hosted an open house for prospective buyers to check out the 9,625-square-foot property.
“Nobody’s pulled out their checkbook yet,” said Bill Overman, the senior director of retail properties for GVA Advantis. However, several people visited the open house to see the building.
The building was built around the 1930s, according to GVA Advantis. It was formerly an antiques shop. The jazz club’s owners began to renovate it in 2005, turning its three stories into a unique location for customers to enjoy meals with friends and listen to a variety of jazz bands.
However, the restaurant closed last year, and GVA Advantis acquired the property. Overman said he believes the building will be ideal for a mixed-use development, with retail or office space on the first floor and apartments or office space on the second and third floors.
“It would be a great law firm,” he said. He also said it would be a great place for a local merchant looking to expand, or possibly even space for a church to meet.
“The work’s done, that’s the main thing,” Overman said. Although all the restaurant equipment, tables, chairs and other furnishings are gone, the building is equipped with air control, heat, sprinkler system, elevator and utilities, and already complies with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
“The elevator is a pretty big expense, and it’s already here,” he said.
GVA Advantis is asking $790,000 for the building, down from its original price of $1.1 million.
