Virginia Wesleyan won the ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) men’s basketball tournament for the third time in five seasons on Sunday in Salem with a 66-62 win over Washington and Lee in the final.

For the four tournament games, freshman power forward Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) averaged 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

The Marlins (17-12) earned the ODAC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. VWC’s first round game is at Widener (Chester, Pa.) on Friday night.

Averett won the USA South men’s basketball tournament for the third straight season. The Cougars beat No. 1 Christopher Newport 70-63 on Saturday at CNU.

Freshman Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) was named to the All-Tournament Team to go along with his Freshman of the Year award in the conference. In the three tourney games, Hart averaged 15.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game along with making 6 of 18 three-pointers.

Averett (20-8) travels to Centre (Danville, Ky.) and face the No. 13 Colonels in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament on Friday.

Christopher Newport won the ODCA women’s basketball tournament on Saturday, beating Greensboro 66-58 in the championship game at CNU. The win snapped a 21-game win streak by Greensboro.

Freshman Shannon Walker (Nansemond River) averages 7.0 minutes, 1.4 rebounds and 1.2 points per game through the season for CNU.

The Lady Captains (22-6) travel to face No. 12 York (Pa.) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Apprentice School’s men’s basketball squad went 3-0 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Newport News with the first two games giving the Builders the championship in the Great Ships Postseason Tournament.

On Friday, the Builders beat Ohio St.-Marion 121-60 with big numbers from three former Suffolk players. Junior Eric Joe (Nansemond River) had 26 points and nine rebounds. Senior Eric Ruffin (Lakeland) had 13 points and 15 assists. Senior Fred Spratley (Nansemond River) had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

On Saturday, Apprentice beat Rhema Bible 85-74. Ruffin and Joe tallied double-doubles as Ruffin had 22 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists and Joe had 20 points and 13 boards.

On Sunday, wrapping the regular season for the Builders, Apprentice (15-14, 11-1 USCAA) beat Robert Morris-Springfield 99-78. Ruffin led the Builders with 28 points and nine assists. Joe had 20 points and Spratley had 17 points and 10 assists.

Chowan won the Shipbuilders Classic tournament at Apprentice on Saturday, winning its final 87-82 against Southern Virginia. Chowan improves to 17-9 on the season with its seventh straight win.

Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) had 22 points for the Hawks. Mark Brown (Nansemond River) had 15 points.

Two former King’s Fork sprinters had top finishes in conference indoor track meets last week.

Virginia Tech freshman Keith Ricks finished sixth in the 200-meter dash at the ACC Championships in Blacksburg, running a time of 21.65 seconds.

Virginia Military sophomore James Alexander placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.48 seconds) at the Big South Championships on Friday in Clemson, S.C. Alexander was also the anchor leg on the Keydets’ third-place 4×400-meter relay. VMI finished second as a team.

Boston College freshman Brittany Wilkins (Nansemond-Suffolk) is leading the Eagle softball team in batting, with a .400 average through 11 games this spring.

Wilkins has three doubles, a home run, nine RBI and a .523 on-base percentage. BC is 4-7 overall.

UVA-Wise sophomore Maddi Ridenour (Nansemond River) is hitting .440 through eight games for the Highland Cavaliers (7-1). Ridenour also has six runs, a triple, 6 of 7 stolen bases and a 1.000 fielding percentage so far this season.
