Averett University won its first NCAA Tournament men’s basketball game since 1990 on Friday, winning at No. 15 Centre (Ky.) 76-71.

Freshman Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) hit a clutch three-pointer to put the Cougars ahead 68-65 with 1:58 left in the game. The Cougars led by as much as 16 early in the second half before Centre rallied to take a one-point lead, 65-64. Hart finished with 12 points.

In Averett’s second-round game on Saturday, Guilford defeated the Cougars 91-81. Hart had 16 points in the loss.

Averett finishes the season 21-9 and with the program’s third straight USA South regular season and tournament championships. Hart averaged 11.7 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game and 38.1 percent three-point shooting. Freshman Ruben Pierce (Nansemond River) played in all 30 games, averaging 3.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

Apprentice’s women’s basketball team went 1-2 in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) National Tournament in Uniontown, Pa. last week. The Lady Builders finish this season 17-13.

Shameka Warren (Nansemond River) and Natarsha Whitworth (Lakeland) are reserves for Apprentice. Warren scored 17 points in the three tournament games, including 11 in Apprentice’s last game, a 63-56 loss to Robert Morris-Springfield.

Hampton freshman Kelsei Saunders (Nansemond River) has Pirate team-highs so far this softball season with a .407 batting average, a .667 slugging percentage and two home runs.

Saunders’ second home run came on Sunday. Saunders hit a three-run homer in Hampton’s 9-6 win against Maryland-Eastern Shore in Orangeburg, S.C. Hampton (5-7) went 2-2 during the weekend trip to Orangeburg.

Mount Olive freshman Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) fired a two-hit shutout on Thursday as Mount Olive defeated Clarion 11-0 on the last day of the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.

Mt. Olive is 9-10-1 overall and went 3-7 during its trip to Orlando.

Chowan split a softball doubleheader against Newberry on Thursday. The CU win ended a 14-game winning streak for Newberry.

In game one, a 3-2 Chowan (13-7) win, sophomore Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to put Chowan ahead 3-2. It was Byrd’s first home run of the season.

Boston College’s softball team stands at 8-12 after going 4-6 during a 10-day long trip through Tennessee and Georgia.

Freshman third baseman/catcher Brittany Wilkins (Nansemond-Suffolk) is hitting .295 with 16 walks, 13 RBI and 11 runs for the Eagles.

BC’s baseball team became the first team to ever win an ACC-opening series against No. 6 Florida St. with a 14-6 win on Saturday and a 12-5 win at FSU on Sunday.

Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) went 2 of 3 at the plate with a run scored in Sunday’s game. Hamlet is hitting .400 (6 of 15) this season in seven games. BC is 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.

Norfolk St. freshman Jermaine Berry (Nansemond River) hit his first collegiate home run on Saturday during the Spartans’ 9-5 loss to visiting Marist. Berry has eight at-bats (.375) in four games so far for NSU (3-4).

Junior centerfielder Tyren Rivers (Nansemond River) helped Radford (4-5) sweep Canisius on the diamond this weekend at Radford. Rivers was 5 of 10 with four runs scored in the three games. In one of Saturday’s games, Radford won 26-1 and Rivers knocked in five RBI.

Freshman Matt Davenport (Nansemond-Suffolk) improved to 2-0 as a reliever for William and Mary’s baseball squad. Davenport pitched 1.1 innings with no hits, no runs and two strikeouts to get the win in W&M’s 10-9, 11-inning win against Princeton on Saturday in Williamsburg. The Tribe (4-7) win was the only one of a four-game series against the Tigers.

Junior Kyle Jett (Nansemond-Suffolk) scored a hat trick in Hampden-Sydney’s 18-12 win against visiting Marymount on Saturday in men’s lacrosse. HSC is 2-2 early on this season. Jett has five goals and six assists for the Tigers.

Lynchburg sophomore Bobby Flintoff (Nansemond-Suffolk) scored the go-ahead goal for the No. 11 (NCAA Div. III) Hornets as they upset No. 5 Cabrini 16-11 Saturday in Lynchburg.

Flintoff scored with 0:08 left in the third quarter to put LC up 11-10. The goal was Flintoff’s third of the season. Sophomore defender Ryan Beale (Nansemond-Suffolk) has seen action in all five games so far for Lynchburg (4-1).
