Iola “Sug” Williams, of 8107 South Quay Road, Suffolk, departed this life on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at her residence. A native of Nansemond County (now Suffolk), Va., she was born on July 21, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Garrett and Iola Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James G. Williams.
She was educated in the public schools of Nansemond County and graduated in 1942 from Nansemond County Training School. She was employed by Gold Kist Peanut Company and retired in 1990.
Mrs. Williams was a member of Laurel Hill United Church of Christ. At Laurel Hill, she was a member of Sunday School Class No. 2. For a number of years, she held membership in the Holland Chapter of the Ladies Aid Lodge and the Annie D. Social and Saving Club.
She is survived by three daughters, Lorita W. Mayo and Mary A. Williams, of Suffolk, and Linda W. Hill (Rev. Elliott), of Windsor; two sons, Ray D. Williams and Carlton L. Williams (Sheila), of Suffolk; two sisters, Mary E. Williams, of Suffolk, and Marian W. Ferebee, of Norfolk; one brother, Ralph L. Williams (Ida), of Suffolk; five grandchildren, Carlos A. Williams (Sherie), Cheryl P. Williams, Bria L. Williams, Mia S. Williams and Garrett J. Williams, all of Suffolk; sister-in-law, Olivia A. Williams, of Suffolk; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The service of worship celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, 8001 South Quay Road, Suffolk, with the Rev. Carl L. Sweat Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurel Hill Church Cemetery. The body will lie in repose prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m. at the church.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 8107 South Quay Road. Professional services are entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home, Inc.
