Two Suffolk outfielders, First Baptist’s Josh Henderson and Nansemond River’s Kyle Moore, are displaying their talent on the baseball diamond this week at the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars in Cary, N.C.
The tournament brings in 144 of the best 18-and-under prospects in the country. It’s a major stepping stone to USA Baseball selecting the U.S. 18U National Team for a number of events in the coming months, including the Junior Pan American Baseball Confederation Championships in Cartegena, Colombia, from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2.
Players are placed on eight teams and Henderson and Moore, who’ve been travel squad teammates for years, were opponents on Wednesday, the opening day of games in Cary.
Moore, a rising senior at Nansemond River, was the centerfielder and lead-off hitter for the USA Stars team.
Henderson, a home-schooled student and rising senior on First Baptist’s team, hit second and played center for the PONY (Protecting Our Nation’s Youth) team.
PONY beat the USA Stars 10-9. Henderson went 2-for-5 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Moore went 2-for-6 with a double and an RBI single.
On Thursday, PONY beat NABF (National Amateur Baseball Federation) 13-1. Henderson started again and had a double in three at-bats.
Babe Ruth beat USA Stars 6-5 in 10 innings. The tournament is playing nine-inning games. Moore had a hit and a run in five times up.
Friday is a scout evaluation day. The Tournament of Stars continues with games Saturday and Sunday.
Players making the cut through this event will stay in Cary for the 18U National Team Trials starting Monday.
