Virginia State sophomore Greg Hunt has two individual titles to his name so far in the spring golf season with the Trojans.

Hunt (Nansemond River) tied for first with teammate Kalani Britos with an even-par round of 72 at the Virginia State University Invitational at the Cardinal Golf Course in Fort Lee on March 16.

Hunt claimed first by himself on Feb. 23 in the Elizabeth City State University Classic at Portsmouth’s Bide-A-Wee Golf Course. Hunt’s 75 was first-place by a shot. VSU won both tournaments.

Mount Olive freshman Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) got her fourth pitching win of the softball season, pitching Mt. Olive to a 2-1 win over Belmont Abbey on Mar. 18 as part of a doubleheader sweep. Saunders pitched six innings, allowing five hits, no walks and one run while getting three strikeouts. Saunders improved to 4-2 on the season. Mt. Olive is 13-11-1 overall and 4-1 in the Carolinas Conference. Also for Mt. Olive, freshman Katie Devenuto (Lakeland) has played in nine games so far this season.

Apprentice’s baseball team has a seven-game winning streak after sweeping a doubleheader on Monday against Montgomery C.C. (NY) by scores of 5-3 and 14-0.

Freshman Nolan Robertson (Lakeland) pitched two innings for the Builders in the 14-0 game. For the season, Robertson has pitched in four games with a 5.68 ERA. The Builders are 14-8.

Radford won two of three games this weekend in a series against Big South foe Presbyterian. In Friday’s game, a 19-5 Highlander win, Tyren Rivers (Nansemond River) went 3 of 5 at the plate with three runs, two walks and an RBI. On Saturday, in a 13-3 Radford win, Rivers was 2 of 5 with an RBI.

For the season, Rivers, a junior outfielder, is hitting .283 with 13 runs scored, two home runs and five stolen bases. Radford is 7-9 overall.

Boston College won two of three in an ACC series at Maryland over the weekend. In Friday’s game, a 6-2 win for BC, sophomore Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) was 3 of 5 with two runs scored. The three hits boosted his average to .333 on the season. The Eagles are 13-6 overall and 4-3 in the ACC.

Virginia Military took two of three in a baseball series against UNC-Asheville over the weekend. Sophomore Justin Topping (Nansemond River) helped the Keydet offense in both victories.

On Friday, in a 6-1 VMI win, Topping went 2 of 3 with a run scored. On Saturday, in a 13-2 VMI win, Topping had a three-RBI double as part of four RBI in all. For the year, Topping is hitting .256 with eight RBI. VMI is 10-11 overall and 4-1 in the Big South.
