Suffolk police have arrested a suspect in a carjacking that occurred Tuesday night.
The suspect is Eltonis Outlaw, 26, of the 400 block of Jackson Street. He is charged with carjacking and felony eluding police.
The victim, a 65-year-old man, was leaving the Kangaroo gas station at 819 W. Washington St. about 9:51 p.m., according to a police report. As he walked to his Chevrolet van, the suspect allegedly knocked him to the ground and told him to stay down, the report says.
The suspect then allegedly emptied the victim’s pockets and threw the contents to the ground, then found the keys and drove off in the victim’s van.
Police spotted the vehicle and attempted to pursue it, but the pursuit was called off because of high speeds, city spokeswoman Debbie George said.
The suspect eventually struck a power pole in the 5900 block of Godwin Boulevard. The suspect fled but was located by police.
The road was closed for part of Tuesday night while Dominion Virginia Power repaired the pole.
