Two Suffolk men have been charged in connection with a string of burglaries in the southern end of the city between January and March.

Frank Arthur Pearson V, 22, of the 800 block of Milford Lane, has been charged with one count of burglary, four counts of grand larceny and three counts of larceny of items with intent to sell, according to Suffolk police.

Nicholas Ryan Chaney, 20, of Whaleyville Blvd., has been charged with one count of grand larceny and one count of larceny of items with intent to sell, police said in a press release.

Pearson is being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond. Chaney was arrested Tuesday and then released on a $3,500 bond. He is scheduled for arraignment in Suffolk General District Court on April 9.

Pearson already faces charges of possession of heroin and possession of marijuana, based on narcotics that police said they found at his home when they executed a search warrant there last month after receiving information that they believed connected him to at least some of the burglaries.

City police secured search warrants for Pearson’s home and another residence on Forest Glen Drive after putting out a call for help in solving the case of dozens of burglaries in the Freeman Mill Road, Holland Road, Indian Trail and Longstreet Lane areas.

Thieves have targeted items such as jewelry, cash, coins, electronics, tools and power equipment in the recent break-ins.

Upon hearing about the burglaries, a local business owner called police, saying that two men had come to his business, attempting to sell items like those that had been listed as stolen.

The business owner provided police with a surveillance video of the men, which police then released to the media. Callers soon began identifying one of the men as Pearson, leading police to secure the search warrants.

During the searches, police recovered a cache of items they believed to have been stolen and later displayed the collection at headquarters, inviting victims to stop by and identify any property that might be theirs. Other area law enforcement agencies were invited, as well.

Suffolk residents reclaimed some of the property, and members of the Southampton Sheriff’s Office dropped in for a look, as well. According to Detective Cpl. Richard Morris, a spokesman for that department, deputies recognized some items that had been stolen in Southampton County and were able to connect them to two other men, who were subsequently arrested and charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny.

Police continue to investigate the burglaries and are still working to connect recovered property to owners, Suffolk spokeswoman Debbie George said in a press release. They are also asking that anyone who might have either purchased or been given items from either Pearson or Chaney contact police or the Crime Line, 1-888-Lock-U-Up.
