Tickets are still available for a reception April 30 honoring Del. S. Chris Jones as Suffolk’s First Citizen.
The Suffolk Rotary Club will present the annual award during the event at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts.
The First Citizen award goes each year to a person who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to give back to the city of Suffolk. Former winners include Betsy Brothers, Ross Boone, Whitney Saunders and Curtis Milteer.
Jones represents the 76th district in the Virginia House of Delegates, and was mayor for the city of Suffolk from 1992 to 1996. He also is a pharmacist at Bennett’s Creek Pharmacy in North Suffolk.
Tickets are $30 each and may be purchased through any member of the Suffolk Rotary Club. Sponsorships also are still available at various levels of support, ranging from Bronze, for $100, to Platinum, for $1,500 — which includes six tickets.
The Cosmopolitan Club created this award in 1956 and stopped after 1998. The Suffolk Rotary Club wanted this to be continued and picked it back up in 2003.
