A Suffolk mother and son were permanently barred from owning animals in a court decision last week.

Catina Beasley and her son Calvin Holland, 18, were accused of allowing the family’s puppy, Buxton, to grow into a harness that became embedded in his body, causing a deep wound and infection. The injury required a $400 surgery to repair.

Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals swore out charges against the pair in January.

“It must have been very painful for the animal,” said Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Susan Walton, who prosecuted the case.

Beasley was found guilty of cruelty to animals, ordered to pay court costs and received a suspended $1,000 fine that she will have to pay if she is found to own an animal. Holland, through a plea agreement, was permanently barred from owning animals, ordered to pay a $100 fine and $393.82 in restitution to PETA for the dog’s medical care. Holland also received a 30-day suspended jail sentence, which he will serve if he fails to reimburse PETA by Sept. 1 or is found to own an animal.

“Having a companion animal is a lifetime commitment that requires time, love, and enough money to pay for a nutritious diet and regular veterinary care,” PETA Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch said in a press release. “Failing to provide animals with adequate care violates Virginia’s cruelty statute, and we strongly urge anyone who witnesses cruelty to animals to report it to the police immediately.”

Buxton has since been adopted by a Hampton couple.
