The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys lacrosse team lost 14-11 to Virginia Episcopal School on Saturday, but put in a strong enough showing that coach Ian Patrick believes his team will maintain its third-place ranking among the state’s Division II squads. After surrendering the first six goals on a neutral field at Richmond Collegiate, the Saints pulled within 12-8 through three quarters against a foe that could be the division’s best.

Thursday, VES upset Highland, which has occupied the division rankings’ top spot all season. Highland dropped that contest 11-7, so Patrick was happy to see his offense do more damage Saturday against what he described as a “poised, patient defense.”

NSA’s offensive output was needed, for the Saints have lost standout defender Josh Todd to groin surgery and aren’t likely to get him back this spring.

Patrick started reserve John White in Todd’s place and spelled him with another backup in Eric McHorney. As those two gained confidence and midfielder Rich Brummett began winning faceoffs, NSA’s comeback gained momentum.

Sam Rapaport had four goals, Carter Pearson had three and Tucker Hotte had two while goaltender C.J. White made seven saves.

The Saints (11-3) host a Tidewater Conference quarterfinal game Tuesday as that tournament’s No. 2 seed, and would host a semifinal Wednesday should they advance.
