Whaleyville Methodist Church celebrated a rich history spanning 140 years with a special anniversary event on Nov. 10, 2024. The celebration, which included the dedication of a new prayer wall, luncheon, and special musical performances, provided an opportunity to reflect on the church’s deep roots in the community.

The church’s origins date back to 1884, when Seth Mitchell Whaley, a prominent figure in the burgeoning lumber industry, saw the need for a Methodist church in the area. Whaley, originally from Maryland, had moved to Virginia in 1877 and established a sawmill near Mineral Spring Road.  The lumber industry attracted many workers from Maryland, predominantly Methodists, who lacked a local place of worship. On March 3, 1884, a meeting was held to discuss the construction of a church, with attendees including Rev. Joseph H. Amiss, Whaley, and several other community members.

Over the decades that followed, Whaleyville Methodist Church underwent several expansions and renovations.  A major milestone occurred in 1951 when, under the leadership of Rev. Starke Jett, construction began on an educational building, later named the Starke Jett Educational Building in his honor.  The new building provided much-needed space for Sunday school classes, a nursery, and a large assembly room, and it quickly became a hub for church and community activities.

In 2023, the church underwent a significant transition, disaffiliating from the United Methodist Church and reclaiming its original name, Whaleyville Methodist Church. This decision, rooted in theological convictions, marked a new chapter in the church’s journey.

The 140th-anniversary celebration served as a testament to the enduring legacy of Whaleyville Methodist Church. Former Pastor Jack Meservey and former Lay Leader Burt Pearce shared messages reflecting on their time serving the church, while Jennifer Rennie presented a detailed account of its history. Glenn Jones’s heartfelt memories of his childhood in the church sparked a wave of reminiscing among attendees, further highlighting the church’s impact on generations of families.

As Whaleyville Methodist Church embarks on its next chapter, its long history of faith, community, and resilience continues to inspire. The anniversary celebration served as a poignant reminder of the church’s vital role in the lives of its members and the wider Whaleyville community.
