A good time to be here

Never let it be said that there’s nothing to do in Suffolk. Parents, especially, can be forgiven if they bristle at the familiar but irritating words, “I’m bored.” More than 20 different events took place in the city on Saturday, several of them representing just the kickoff galas for month-long celebrations of arts or other cultural activities.
The problem this weekend wasn’t in finding something to do — it was finding the time to do it all. From a “Touch-a-Truck Family Fun Day” in the parking lot of the Godwin Courts building to the 100th anniversary of Hall Place to Driver Alive! to Whaleyville Community Day, organizations were lined up on Saturday looking to attract residents’ attention and get them out of the house.
The weather played nice, and, despite the competition for people’s time, many of the events were well attended, making for a successful day for their organizers and a fun time for those who took advantage of a busy day in the city.
Surely the plethora of entertainment and recreational choices this weekend had something to do with the onset of spring. But a growing slate of events to entertain its residents and attract visitors from outside of the city is one more reason to cheer the direction in which Suffolk is heading. On Saturday, it really was a good time to be in Suffolk.
With a birding festival in the Great Dismal Swamp and a huge car show downtown, along with several other events, the coming weekend promises to be another good time to be here. Why not plan to stay home and enjoy them?
