Vernell C. Mitchell

Vernell C. Mitchell, born in 1941 in Nansemond County, Virginia, to parents Hucless Thomas, Sr. and Elaine Wright Thomas, who preceded her in death, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 at her home on November 16, 2024. Vernell was a graduate of East Suffolk High School, where she built the foundation for a life of dedication, hard work, and service to her family, church, and community.

Vernell was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Randolph Mitchell, Sr., who passed away on July 28, 2024. She is survived by her two children, Randolph Mitchell, Jr. (Renee) of Florida, and Vera Mitchell of North Carolina. Her youngest son, Marshalle Mitchell, also preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Vera Mae Walton, and her brother, Johnny Earl Thomas. Vernell is survived by her sister, Estelle White (Wallace) of Decatur, Georgia, and her brother, Hucless Thomas, Jr. (Melinda) of Hobson, Virginia. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Yvonne Thomas of Churchland, Virginia, Mary Lee Chapman, and Alice Mitchell of Suffolk, Virginia.

Vernell leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Marquita Coleman (AJ), Winston Mitchell, and Mikayla Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Shawricka Mitchell. She was further blessed with seven great-grandchildren and leaves a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, special godchildren, church members, and friends.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, a viewing will take place from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Crocker Funeral Home. A celebration of life and homegoing service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Gates of Heaven Church of God in Christ, 112 Beech Street, Suffolk, VA, 23434. During the service, a ceremonial commitment will be made, entrusting Vernell C. Mitchell to her final resting place.

Interment will take place at a later date at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milner’s Road, Suffolk, VA, 23434, where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Randolph Mitchell, Sr.
