Catching the dream job

It is not in my nature to envy others. I spend my days trying to be grateful for what life gives me as I chase my dreams. After all, life has given me my health — not counting a little spot of diabetes — and it has given me certain creative and analytical abilities that often keep me in good standing at work. So I’d have to say all in all, I have it pretty good.
But while I was surfing the web recently, I read the story of Ben Southall, who beat out 35,000 applicants worldwide to get what is called “Best Job in the World.” Now, saying this job he’s won is somehow better than the life I live, given my optimistic take on things, would suggest that my life is not as good as I believe it is.
And when I suggest that my life is better than any dream job I only ask that you be mindful of the immortal words of George Constanza on Seinfeld, when Jerry seeks his advice on how to beat a lie detector, “It’s not a lie, if you believe it.”
Here are the specifics of the “best job in the world,” as compared with my own life experiences. You tell me who’s got it better:
4Salary for the dream job: $111,000, not too shabby.
Salary of my job: I don’t see how that’s any of your business.
4Duration of the dream job: Six months (Over $100K for a half-year’s work. Loving it!)
Duration of my job: Until….
4Dream job description: To swim, explore and relax on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef while writing a blog to promote the area. (Play all day and write about it. Wow!)
My job description: Again, I don’t see how that’s any of your business. What’s with the interrogation, people? I’m not on trial here.
4Apparently, the rigorous interview process for the best job ever required applicants “to snorkel, gorge themselves at a beachside barbecue and relax at a spa.” My last interview for a graphic design position asked if I could airbrush a mole off an elderly lady’s face and make it look convincing. (Envious yet, Mr. Southall?)
4“Southall will live for free in an airy, three-bedroom oceanfront villa with a private pool and sweeping views of the surrounding islands,” according to the article. “He plans to bring his Canadian girlfriend to the island.”
I live across the street from the beach, and one day, while I was taking my morning run, I found the toilet part of a port-a-potty in the sand. Good luck finding something that cool while snorkeling, Southall.
Ultimately, though I kid, I would like to congratulate Ben Southall and all people like him who chase a dream and catch it. There are 34,999 people out there who can say they chased it with you. But only you caught it.
But eat your heart out, Ben Southall. I used to fry chicken at KFC. You may have your fancy job with all that money. But I bet you’ll never once come home from your job smelling of the intoxicating aroma of 11 herbs and spices.
Living a dream is great, but it is so much better to see the dream in what you’re living.
