Some folks enjoy people-watching. I am particularly entertained by bureaucrat-watching. This involves observing workers who think up “wonderful” ideas based on what they can see from their office windows.

I suspect that Suffolk’s recently passed $452.7-million spending plan submitted by City Manager Selena Cuffee-Glenn includes such an idea. New charges for bulk refuse pickup range from $20 to $50, depending on the size of the pile.

This assumes the city knows who left the pile(s). Considering our neighborhood’s street configuration I’m wondering how that is going to work for us. There are three private roads that empty onto our road; residents bring their trash to common areas for pickup.

Also there is an extended section of our road along which the land is jointly owned by 12 households, including us. Scoundrels who don’t want to pay for their own piles will surely dump their bulk refuse on our property at night, and the city will attempt to charge us for it.

Wonderful.
