Council approves funding for Suffolk public transit service, airport

Suffolk City Council approved two consent agenda ordinances during their Wednesday, Oct. 16 meeting at City Hall.
Council approved 8-0 to accept $12,280.93 in funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Aviation to support Suffolk Executive Airport for the Fiscal Year 2024-25. Funding will be used to provide assistance with repairs towards the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) Ceilometer. City Manager Albert S. Moor II provided details during the meeting.
“Adoption of the ordinance will increase the revenues and expenditures of the Aviation Facilities Fund budget by the $12,280.93. Local match of $646.37 is required and is available within the Aviation Facilities Fund budget,” Moor said during the meeting.
Council also accepted $62,500 in State Technical Assistance Program funding from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT). Funds will be used for the City of Suffolk’s public transit service to conduct a Transit Development Plan minor update.
“Adoption of the ordinance will increase the revenues and expenditures of the Transit System Fund budget by the $62,500 and a local match of $62,500 required and this is also available within the Consolidated Grants Fund budget,” Moor said.
