Lynchburg and Hampden-Sydney both lost in the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament to finish their men’s lacrosse seasons last week.

Lynchburg lost 12-11 to eventual-champions Washington and Lee. The Hornets finish the season 11-5 overall. Sophomore attacker Robert Flintoff and sophomore defender Ryan Beale are NSA alums on the Lynchburg squad.

Hampden-Sydney matched up against No. 1 seed and No. 1-nationally Roanoke College. The Tigers were tied 11-11 with Roanoke with 13 minutes to play before losing 17-12. HSC finished 8-9.

Junior Kyle Jett (Nansemond-Suffolk) scored two goals and had two assists against Roanoke. Jett finished the season with 34 goals (tied for team-high) and 20 assists (second on the team).

UVA-Wise’s softball team won the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament last Friday in Kingsport, Tn. UVA-Wise went 4-0 in the tourney and capped the title with a 10-0 win in the final game over Union.

Sophomore centerfielder Maddi Ridenour (Nansemond River), the leadoff hitter for the Highland Cavaliers, was 6 for 13 at the plate with four runs scored and two RBI. In the opening game of the tourney, Ridenour’s RBI in the third inning gave UVA-Wise a 1-0 win against Tennessee Wesleyan.

For the season, Ridenour leads the team with a .373 batting average. Ridenour is 52 of 58 on stolen base attempts along with four triples and no errors out of 64 chances in center field.

UVA-Wise (31-15) advances to the NAIA National Championship which starts May 14 in Decatur, Al.

Boston College sophomore Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) was 5 for 5 at the plate on April 28 in BC’s 13-10 win against Quinnipiac. Hamlet’s perfect day included three runs and two doubles.

Over the weekend in Chestnut Hill, Mass., BC lost two of three to conference foe Miami. Hamlet, at either second base or left field, was 3 for 10 at the plate in the series. For the year, Hamlet’s hitting .315 with 25 runs, six doubles and a .408 on-base percentage.

BC (29-19, 12-13) has six regular-season games left before heading into the ACC Tournament starting May 20 in Durham, N.C.

On Boston College’s softball team, freshman Brittany Wilkins (Nansemond-Suffolk) has started 48 of 50 games for the Eagles, playing either catcher or third base.

Wilkins is hitting .248 with nine doubles, five home runs and 23 RBI. With 31 walks and 11 hit-by-pitches included, Wilkins’ on-base percentage is a team-high .421. BC is 18-32 overall and 3-15 in the ACC.

Hampton University’s softball team swept Norfolk State last Thursday. Freshman infielder Kelsei Saunders (Nansemond River) was 3 for 5 with an RBI in game one, a 10-6 HU win; and then hit her 11th home run of the season in game two, an 8-3 Hampton win.

On Wednesday, Saunders was selected as a first team member of the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team.

Saunders is hitting a team-high .344 with six doubles, 11 homers, 31 RBI and a .672 slugging percentage.

Hampton (23-21, 8-6 MEAC) started play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday in Ormond Beach, Fla.

St. Augustine’s men’s track and field team won its third straight CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Outdoor Track and Field title on April 18 at Virginia State University. It was the 11th championship in the last 12 seasons for St. Augustine.

St. Augustine freshman Chris Copeland (Lakeland) finished third in the high jump with a height of 2.03 meters. The team totaled 239.75 points with second-place Bowie St. scoring 88.5 points.

Hampton University’s men’s track team finished second in the MEAC at the conference’s championships last weekend at North Carolina A&T.

Sophomore Predist Walker (Lakeland) placed third in the long jump (7.24 meters) and third in the 110-meter hurdles (14.07). Walker’s time in the hurdles was an NCAA Regional qualifying time.

Norfolk State won the MEAC championship for the fourth straight year. Freshman Darryl Brickhouse (Nansemond River) is on the Spartan team.

William and Mary freshman Matt Davenport (Nansemond-Suffolk) won the Colonial Athletic Association’s Co-Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week awards for his performance in the week of April 26-May 3.

Davenport pitched in two games for the Tribe, including in an 8-2 win against conference rival James Madison in which Davenport (6-2) pitched 8.2 innings allowing six hits and two runs. W&M (22-22, 9-11) has five games remaining in the regular season.
