Mike KafkaDirector, Corporate Communications & Public Relations shared the following statement:

This week, Sentara Health notified employees of a reduction in our workforce impacting approximately 200 positions, which represents less than 1% of Sentara Health’s 34,000 employees. The majority of the positions are within Sentara Health Plans, with the remaining being corporate shared services positions that function in support of health plan operations.

In a communication to the organization, Sentara Health President and CEO Dennis Matheis stated, “These individuals have been dedicated and mission-driven team members and we are grateful for their passion and contributions to the organization and to the community.”

Due to the Medicaid redetermination process, there has been a significant decline in Medicaid membership across the U.S. and Virginia. For Sentara Health Plans, this has resulted in a loss of over 115,000 members, which is approximately 16% of our Medicaid membership, in the past year. These workforce adjustments align our staffing levels with our health plan membership.

This decision was not made lightly, and we are committed to supporting our employees.

Impacted colleagues are being provided 60 days to continue working or transition to their next role. Sentara is making every attempt to find them another role within Sentara, upskill for other in-house positions, or offer severance and resources for those who are unable to find a new position within the Sentara family or who choose to transition elsewhere.

Additional Information:

  • Approximately 200 positions have been impacted. However, the final number of impacted employees is yet to be determined as we work to find impacted team members another role within Sentara.
  • The positions span multiple levels, approximately 40% being leadership positions.
  • The impacted positions span ten states, with the majority residing in Virginia.
