City Treasurer Ronald H. Williams is celebrating another successful year of his Treasurer’s United Way golf tournament, held on Friday, Sept. 13 at Sleepy Hole golf course.

Marking its 29th year, the tournament has been coordinated by Shirley Snead since its inception. Snead, who first started with the Treasurer’s Office in 1979, created the idea of the tournament in 1996.

“We had a long history of raising funds to support the United Way both in the community and among City employees,” Snead said in a statement. “And after seeing so many other fundraising golf tournaments in our community, I knew that we could do one, too.”

Williams estimates over $21,000 being raised for the United Way of South Hampton Roads.

“I have had a long relationship with the United Way of South Hampton Roads, and have an agreement with them to designate the vast majority of these proceeds back to Suffolk agencies, organizations, and charities, meaning that most of these dollars stay in Suffolk,” Williams said.

The tournament saw 76 golfers divided into nineteen foursomes and three flights, with the winning team in the first flight including Jerry Kent, Chris Szymanski, David Szymanski and Marc Patterson, who shot 53. The second flight’s winning team included Jimmy Jones, Bobby Williams, Frank West and Mike Chappell, who shot 63. The third flight saw two teams tied to win by shooting 66. The first foursome included Bill Pollard, Dale Schurrman, Jason Robb and Clyde Clark with the second foursome including Ronald Williams, City Manager Albert S. Moor II, Real Estate Assessor Billy Butt and Council Member John Rector. The tournament also saw sponsors from the Brooks Law Firm, TowneBank, Davenport and Company, the Virginia Auction Company and Deborah’s Women in Ministry of Greater Hampton Roads, Inc. 

“We are definitely planning on hosting this again next year for the 30th year,” Williams said.

Previous recipients of the golf tournament proceeds included the Suffolk Cheer Fund, Western Tidewater Free Clinic, the Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk (CAPS), The Suffolk Education Foundation, the Virginia Legal Aid Society, ForKids, Meals on Wheels of Suffolk and Isle of Wight, the Suffolk Salvation Army, the Suffolk Crime Line, the Suffolk Art League, the Suffolk Humane Society, and the Disabled American Veterans. 

“These particular agencies do so much to help so many in our community all throughout the year,” Chief Deputy Treasurer Andrew Owen said.

Williams thanked everyone who played a part in making the tournament a success.

“We couldn’t do this without the continued support and generosity of our sponsors and players,” he concluded.
