Southampton Academy is one of 15 Virginia schools to receive a share of The Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s (DGLF) youth literacy grants. DGLF announced Thursday that it awarded over $55,000 to nonprofit organizations, libraries, and schools in Virginia, including $3,948 to Southampton Academy.

These funds are part of over $4 million recently distributed nationwide, aimed at helping recipients purchase books, technology, equipment, or materials to support K-12 students and their futures.

“We understand that investing in youth literacy means investing in the future of students and our collective communities,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “Through these grants, we hope to enhance programs that foster students’ critical thinking skills, creativity, and confidence so they can unlock their potential and achieve their dreams.”

The Virginia grants are expected to positively impact approximately 5,500 individuals nationwide. A comprehensive list of grant recipients is available online at www.dgliteracy.org.

Applications for the 2025 Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant cycle, which supports youth, family, summer, and adult literacy programs, will be available in January 2025 at www.dgliteracy.org. These grants are intended to support schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center in implementing new literacy initiatives or expanding existing ones.

Additionally, the DGLF is hosting its fifth annual Yellow Glasses Project through September 8, or while supplies last. Customers can purchase yellow sunglasses at Dollar General stores for $2 each, with all proceeds benefiting the Foundation.
