Suffolk names New Chief of Police

Following a nationwide search that saw a community feedback survey, the new Suffolk Chief of Police was named on Friday, June 21 by City Manager Albert S. Moor II.
James “Danny” Buie, who has served as Interim Chief of Police since 2023, has been appointed as the new Chief of Police, effective Monday, July 8, 2024.
Serving Suffolk Police Department for 27 years, Buie was hired in Sept. 1996 following his graduation from the Chesapeake Police Academy and has served in various capacities, including Field Training Officer, Special Investigations Narcotics Investigator, Sergeant of the newly formed Neighborhood Enforcement Team (NET) and much more. Prior to being appointed Interim Chief of Police in 2023, Buie was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief (Major) of Criminal Investigations in 2017.
In his tenure, Buie has received numerous qualifications, such as Primary Hostage Negotiator, SWAT Operator, SWAT Team Leader, Executive SWAT Officer, Gang Specialist and New Officer Leadership Trainer, among others.
Along with being a graduate of West Point Leadership School, the Professional Executive Leadership School (PELS), Buie is a 2016 graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session 264.
