The high school basketball season’s been over for more than two months, but national and state honors continue to come in for King’s Fork senior TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers.

Rodgers, who finished with 2,274 career points for the Lady Bulldogs, has earned a place in Parade Magazine’s All-American team, on the fourth team; and this past week Rodgers was named Virginia Group AAA Player of the Year by the Associated Press.

The last time a girls basketball player from South Hampton Roads was named state player of the year was 2004, before King’s Fork High School was open.

Rodgers has accepted a scholarship offer from Georgetown University and is getting set to move up to Washington D.C. to get started with basketball practices and classes over the summer.

“July 2nd, so I’ll leave a day or two before that,” said Rodgers.

“I’m going to miss my family, my friends and the school. Classes start at that time. I’m kind of excited about that,” said Rodgers on Friday at King’s Fork High School as she was presented with plaques for the Parade All-American and Virginia Player of the Year awards.

Being at Georgetown for most of the summer will also allow Rodgers to workout with her new Hoya teammates. Rodgers is of course excited about that new experience, but she already has knowledge to draw on when it comes to fitting in on a new team.

“I’m kind of used to it with Boo’s team (Boo Williams AAU team). I didn’t know any of the players on that team, at least on a personal level, when I started, but you get to know each other. I think I’ll get to know everyone on the team well.”

“I’m looking forward just to getting better than I am now,” said Rodgers.

“Happy” and “excited” are how Rodgers describes her emotions when she learns of another prestigious award. “Being named all-state means a lot, just to be all-region or all-district means a lot,” said Rodgers.
