SFD investigates fatal fire

Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to the 4400 Block of Holland Road for a reported power line down and brush on fire. Emergency Communications dispatched the incident at 2:54 a.m.
Upon arrival, Engine 7 upgraded the response due to a large fire in the area. Once Engine 7’s crews started to attack the fire, the crew located a tractor hauling a shipping container on fire. The tractor had left the roadway and struck several trees. The tractor was well involved in fire. The shipping container had overturned but was not on fire. The fire was placed under control at 3:30 a.m. Once the fire was out, firefighter’s located one person deceased in the cab of the tractor. The saddle tank ruptured and is contained. Firefighters are working to identify the contents of the shipping container, yet the contents of the shipping container were not involved in the fire and are not a hazard. Suffolk Police is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash and the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Fire Marshal 6 is still on scene with SPD investigating the fire at the time of this release. All other fire units have cleared.
