The Norfolk Admirals picked up another win after completing the weekend sweep of the South Carolina Stingrays Saturday with a 2-1 victory.
Early on, it was clear the game would be physical, and both teams would have to earn every shot on goal.
At the 6:05 mark of the first period, Norfolk’s Mark Liwiski and Stingray’s Garet Hunt locked up for the first of many altercations, including a shoving match after the final horn. Both hit the penalty box for a five-minute major. At the 6:23 mark, Admirals Gehrett Sargis found the back of the net to put the Admirals up 1-0, where It remained until Kamerin Nault put another shot past Stingray goalie Mitchell Gibson at the 1:56 mark of the third period.
The Stingrays almost found the net minutes later, but the goal was negated and the score remained 2-0.
In his debut, Admirals goalie Oskari Salminen was poised to pitch a shutout until South Carolina’s Ivan Lodnia snuck a shot past with under one minute to play in the game.
Salminen gave up just one goal on 20 attempts to help seal another win for the Admirals, improving to 29-19-3-1 on the season and holding onto second place in the ECHL North with 62 points.
The Admirals are back in the Scope Wednesday, Feb. 28, to face the top-seeded Adirondack Thunder. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
