Suffolk City Council approved Suffolk Public School’s application for Northern Shores Elementary’s expansion project. During their Wednesday, Nov. 15 council meeting, council members voted to approve a consent agenda for the school division’s application to the Virginia Board of Education School Construction Assistance Program for grant funding for their Northern Shores Elementary School Addition Project. Suffolk City Manager Albert S. Moor II provided details on the project. 

“The grant funding assists in constructing the 30,000 square foot [and] two-story addition with an expanded cafeteria, multiple bathrooms, and ADA playground and expanded parking lot,” Moor said. “The project costs are estimated at $20 million. Qualifying projects are eligible to receive up to 20% of approved project costs, including planning, design and construction.”

Other consent agenda items approved included an ordinance to accept $1,980 in funds from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Animal Friendly License Plate Program toward the FY 2023-24 Consolidated Grants Fund Budget for animal sterilization, an ordinance to accept $38,145.93 in funds from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in support of Suffolk’s Litter Prevention and Recycling Program and Extended Polystyrene Campaigns, and an ordinance to accept $7,000 in funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia Technology Trust Fund for fees associated with the Tyler Technologies Application for criminal and civil cases. 

Also included were two resolutions: one to accept a donation of a Palmer’s Dollhouse, a fire training aid for recruits to demonstrate fire behavior, for the Suffolk Department of Fire and Rescue, and another to amend Resolution Number 23-R-042 for the authorization of the City Manager to execute a development agreement for Glasscock Properties. This follows members of the Glasscock family wanting to donate 92 acres in the Village of Chuckatuck to the City of Suffolk for a future public park attached to Lone Star Lakes Parks. Suffolk will take possession of the properties on Dec. 30, 2025.
