A gas leak shut down the highly traveled section of Pruden Blvd. between Jordan Ave. and Godwin Blvd. when a contractor struck a gas line on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a news release, Suffolk Fire and Rescue was notified of the incident and dispatched units at 3:41 p.m. Upon arrival, crews immediately evacuated the area and shut down all traffic on Pruden Blvd. between Jordan Ave and Godwin Blvd. 

Suffolk Traffic Engineering and Suffolk Public Works established a detour of Pruden Blvd. 

Virginia Natural Gas and Columbia Gas were both on the scene and, along with the incident commander, developed a plan to secure the leak and repair the gas line. 

According to the news release, Suffolk Fire and Rescue evacuated 11 people and assessed two evacuated individuals with medical complaints. 

The Regal Inn was also evacuated. 

The roadway reopened late Wednesday evening.
