Suffolk residents are urged to stay inside when possible and drink plenty of water during a scorching heat wave.

Yesterday’s temperatures reached near-record highs in the upper 90s. The rest of the week is expected to keep steaming the city, though not quite as hot.

“It looks like today should be the end of the hottest temperatures,” Dan Proch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, said Thursday.

Temperatures today are expected to be in the low to mid 90s rather than the upper 90s seen earlier in the week, Proch said. Friday’s high should be around 95, with highs hovering around 90 for the weekend.

“There’s a high pressure area to our south,” Proch said. “It’s pushing a lot of warm, hot air into our area.”

On Tuesday, relief will come with a high projected near 83. Temperatures should stay in the lower 80s most of next week.

But in the meantime, Proch recommended that citizens stay in air-conditioned buildings unless going out is unavoidable, stay fully hydrated with water and save outdoor activity for late in the evening or early in the morning.

“You don’t want to be out in the peak times of the day,” Proch said. “And you always want to keep hydrated.”
