The Nansemond River Preservation Alliance is looking for volunteers to assist with projects planned around the city through the end of April.

Projects include working on a walking plan, moving shrubs, helping with exhibits and taking samples to monitor water conditions. Additionally, NRPA is planning several community activities that are open to the public

The following are the activities planned:

• Saturday, Jan. 21, 9-10:30 a.m.: NRPA Conservation Demonstration Site, Sleepy Hole Park (near the pier). Volunteers needed for maintenance: weed-wacking, redesign walking path.
• Wednesday, Feb. 22, 9:30-noon: NRPA third grade program CE & H Ruritan Hall. Volunteers needed to assemble learning kits.
• Saturday, Feb. 25,  9-10:30 a.m.: NRPA Conservation Demonstration Site, Sleepy Hole Park (near the pier). Volunteers needed for pruning, relocating shrubs.
• Tuesday, March 28, 6:30 p.m. social, 7 p.m. program: NRPA River Talk at CE&H Ruritan Hall:  Topic is wildlife rehabilitation program. The event is open to the public.
• Tuesday and Wednesday, April 18 and 19, 9-11 a.m.: Marshfield Study (middle school students), Bennetts Creek Park: Seeking volunteers to help staff the hands-on exhibits.
• Saturday, April 22, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: Earth and Arts Festival, Westminster Reformed Church, 3488 Godwin Blvd., sponsored by Suffolk Parks and Recreation. This is a family oriented activity featuring dozens of exhibits and vendors.
• April (date and time yet to be determined): Sampling and monitoring on the Nansemond River (2 ½ hour boat trip): Seeking volunteers to assist.
