As Hurricane Ian bears down on the region, Nansemond Suffolk Academy announced its closure Friday and Suffolk Public Schools canceled all after-school activities on Friday, Sept. 30.

The National Weather Service issued both a coastal flood warning and a flood watch for Suffolk and the region as bands from the hurricane move into the region Friday and continue through Saturday.

This forecast was the weather alerts already issue prompted NSA administrators to call off Friday classes.

The SPS cancelation of after-school activities came in a message to parents from community engagement coordinator Melvin Bradshaw. This will include cancelation of all area Friday night football games.

In the latest flood watch, NWS officials said they expect Ian to make its second landfall in South Carolina Friday and then to track northwest through the Carolinas Friday night.

“Several rounds of moderate to heavy rain are likely in the watch area from Friday through Friday night before the heaviest rain pushes offshore Saturday morning,” the weather service’s watch message stated. “On average, 2 to 4 inches of rain are expected, with localized amounts of 4 to 6 inches possible. Despite the dry antecedent conditions, this will likely be enough to result in a few instances of flooding, especially in urban and flood prone areas.”
