Anyone who likes to paint can join in the fun during the Suffolk Plein Air Festival’s “Quick Draw” event.
The Quick Draw is from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 10 during the Taste of Suffolk downtown street festival. This fun competition asks artists to complete an entire piece of Plein Air artwork in just 120 minutes.
So, what is Plein Air Painting? This is all about leaving the artist’s studio behind and experiencing painting in an outdoor setting. Painters have to work fast as the light is always changing. The Quick Draw event gives artists the opportunity to paint on the streets of downtown Suffolk while the Taste of Suffolk event is going on, providing lots of great compositions to choose from.
Suffolk Plein Air Quick Draw is open to all ages and abilities. Pre-registration and complete rules are available online at www.suffolkpleinair.org or those interested may register in person beginning at 11 a.m. on the day of the event. There is a $10 registration fee and each artist must provide all of their own painting supplies.
The Quick Draw tent will be located at Bank and Main streets. Painters must work within the Taste of Suffolk event boundaries. They will have two hours to create their painting. By 2 p.m., all paintings must be checked in at the tent for judging. There are monetary awards for adult artists and a French easel will be the first-place prize for the student category.
In addition, the finished artwork can be for sale. Visitors to Taste of Suffolk should come by between 2 and 3:30 p.m. for the opportunity to purchase some great artwork illustrating the unique beauty and style of Suffolk’s downtown.
Anyone with questions should call Sandy Waters, cvent co-chair, at 757-925-1800.
Suffolk Plein Air Festival is sponsored by Suffolk Art League, Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts and Suffolk Tourism Division.
