The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the region, effective between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday, July 21.

The warning notice, issued by the NWS office in Wakefield, states that dangerously hot conditions with heat index values around 110 degrees are expected in portions of eastern and southeast Virginia.

“Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” NWS officials said in the warning.

They encourage residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances,” according to the agency.

Those who work or spend time outside are urged to take extra precautions, such as rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Those who do have to be outside should know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Additionally, NWS said to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

Anyone overcome by heat, the warning notice states, should be moved to a cool and shaded location and call 911.
