A road worker was seriously injured Friday morning when struck by a state trooper’s vehicle on Route 58 at Wilroy Road.
According to a Virginia State Police news release, a “male pedestrian” was setting up signage just after 7 a.m. for upcoming work in and around the roadway and “began walking across Route 58, causing traffic to come to a sudden stop.”
A state trooper in an unmarked vehicle braked rapidly and swerved into the median, “in an attempt to avoid the other vehicles that had suddenly stopped,” the news release said. “When the patrol car went into the median, it collided with the male pedestrian.”
The victim, whom authorities did not identify, was transported to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with serious injuries. A VSP spokeswoman said he is employed by a private contractor rather than the Virginia Department of Transportation. The trooper was not injured.
The Virginia State Police Chesapeake Division Crash Reconstruction team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
