Suffolk, like other communities, has a group of people who go about their daily jobs doing great things without any fanfare or hoopla.

I am referring to the men and women who serve to protect our community at the police and sheriff’s office, and the regional jail.

Every day they report to work they carry the onus placed upon them to serve and protect the citizens no matter what comes their way. Prior to starting their careers in law enforcement, each one at these agencies has to swear an oath to serve and protect others and defend the constitutions of the United States and of Virginia.

Whether they are on the street patrolling, serving civil papers, ensuring that the courts are safe places to go or making sure that those incarcerated are kept secure and treated humanely, they each face the potential threat of harm to themselves or others.

So, each day we should say a prayer for them for God to give them wisdom, strength and protection to do their jobs. And then thank them when you see them for doing jobs that not everyone can do.
