The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts will host a new art exhibition curated by the Chesapeake Bay Art Association.

The CBAA’s 59th annual Members Art Show opens with a reception on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the center’s two galleries. The exhibition will continue through June 24, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The show will feature 36 CBAA artists, nine high school students and 98 works of art. Mediums include paintings, photography, pottery, glass, metal, paper and a unique 4-foot by-5-foot mixed media sculpture entitled “Here: Disco Desert Runaway” by Loren Hoffman. Hoffman’s art description reads: “After photographing 10,000 photos over 10 days in the desert, Loren wanted to bring a part of the magic out of the West and into the gallery. Letting the viewer experience the bazaar of Arizona and Desert X from the viewpoint of an Alien Disco Wizard.”

Judge Kyle Kogut will select the Best in Show and other winning artworks. CBAA Award winners will be presented with Jerry’s Artarama gift certificates during Thursday’s opening reception. Gallery visitors are encouraged to vote for the CBAA People’s Choice Award through June 24.

Kogut, a Norfolk resident, is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in drawing and sculpture. He graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Mount Royal School of Art multidisciplinary program in 2016. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art in 2012. Kogut is a visiting assistant professor of drawing and painting at Old Dominion University.

Local artists whose works will be featured are Tosha Watkins of Suffolk and Shirley Whitenack of Carrollton.

The Chesapeake Bay Art Association was founded in the Ocean View area of Norfolk on Aug. 8, 1961, as a group “that gets together and makes art, talks about art, looks at art, and raises money for young artists to go to art school.”
