Even the rain couldn’t stop golfers in Suffolk from coming out and supporting a good cause.

The LL12 Foundation held its first Logy Bear Golf Tournament on Oct. 29 at Riverfront Golf Course. Around 100 golfers registered to play a round of golf when the rain luckily decided to fade out at the noon shotgun start.

Along with the game of golf, there were 40 items ready for the raffle, with the money going towards the foundation’s scholarship fund. After the game, everyone came back for dinner and awarded the top three teams of the day with trophies.

“We’ve had a great turnout today for our first year,” said Amy Eichelberger, the golf tournament director.

The LL12 foundation was started in memory of Logan Koontz, a 16-year-old student-athlete at Tabb High School in Yorktown. Koontz and two friends died in a car crash leaving their homecoming dance in 2019. With Logan being a star athlete and involved in the school’s ROTC program, his parents started the LL12 Foundation to provide scholarships to similarly involved students in Logan’s memory.

Since this would be Logan’s senior year of high school, his mother, Michelle Koontz, wants to give 12 $1,000 scholarships in his honor this year, since 12 was his jersey number for football.

“Since this would be his senior year, I thought it would be a great year to do as many as we possibly can,” said Koontz. “We really appreciate all the community support and friends’ support that keeps us running and Logan’s memory alive.”

The foundation has held other events this year, including a 5K/8K run in Williamsburg and a corn hole tournament at Fort Monroe. Even though Tabb High School is located in Yorktown, the foundation wants to bring the scholarship to students in the entire Hampton Roads area.

“We just want to spread the word about the scholarship process to the Southside,” said Eichelberger. “We want to let student-athletes know that they can apply.”

With the success of the first Logy Bear Golf Tournament, the foundation hopes to make it bigger and better each year.
