A fundraiser benefit will take place on Sunday for the family of Suffolk Police Sgt. Joe Rivera, who died of COVID-19 on May 31.
The benefit will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. at Derl’z Restaurant & Pub, 425 E. Pinner St. Barbecue plates will be sold for $10, and there will be music by DJ Aaron, games and raffles.
Estelita Buie, who has been assisting the Rivera family, said Joe’s wife, Pam, is adjusting with the help of family and friends.
“I’m putting on this benefit with the assistance of Donna Perry, owner of Derl’z, in an effort to raise money for any needs she has as she navigates her new life,” Buie said. “But most importantly, I wanted to provide a fun atmosphere for her to come to and her law enforcement family have an opportunity to spend time with her under more positive circumstances and remind her that we are still here for her and will always be here for her. Her loss is also our loss.”
Buie said that Joe Rivera was a true leader and always strived to do the right thing.
“I try to think of what Joe would want us to be doing for his bride during this time, and my conclusion was to show her we are here for her for whatever need she may have,” Buie said. “Our officers and their families give so much to this city and the citizens of this city. The very least we can all do is to continue to be of assistance to the widow of one of our fallen officers as she continues to grieve and heal from this great loss.”
