The last time Suffolk Public Schools had a school named Southwestern, it was 2014 and it was an elementary school located in Holland.
The 200 students who attended bid goodbye to the school by singing “So Long, Farewell,” in the style of “The Sound of Music.”
The name Southwestern Elementary School returned July 1 with the renaming of Pioneer Elementary School off of U.S. Route 58 and Pioneer Road, which followed a 4-3 vote last December by the School Board in favor of the change. The school has kept the mascot, Mustangs, as well as the purple and gray colors.
Superintendent Dr. John B. Gordon said there would be an opening for the renamed Southwestern Elementary prior to the first day of the 2021-2022 school year.
