I am writing in response to the editorial titled “Reaching out for vaccines” published in your newspaper on May 26.

As someone who lives in Northern Suffolk, I have the means and ability to easily get my vaccination because of the multiple vaccination sites and transportation opportunities. Many of my family members live in the Windsor and Ivor area, and I appreciate Western Tidewater Health District’s dedication about distributing the vaccine to these rural areas.

But what about the residents who don’t have transportation opportunities because of their health issues, age, and lack of public transportation? While it’s true increasing the amount of vaccination sites would allow more people to receive their vaccine, it leaves out the population who have constrained abilities that they can’t help.

It’s necessary to take a step back and acknowledge which pieces are not being considered. In this case, it’s the population who experience health issues and are older. I then wonder how we can help this part of our community? One way could be mentioning the free ride for a vaccine opportunity that the company Lyft is currently offering. While I’m not entirely sure if Lyft would be available in all of these areas, it’s still a start in the right direction that includes all of our Southampton and Isle of Wight communities.
