A traditional photography exhibit is returning soon to Suffolk.
The Suffolk Art Gallery will host its 37th Annual Juried Photography Exhibit. This exhibit is the largest and longest-running juried exhibition of photographic works in Hampton Roads and will run from March 6 to April 16.
A virtual awards announcement will replace the reception that is usually held to announce and celebrate the winners. This announcement will announce the photographers on display and state the winners. The awards range from $100 Honorable Mentions to $500 for Best in Show.
“Last year, we were able to install the exhibit, have the opening reception in person, and be open to the public for almost two weeks before the city closed,” said Angela Reavis, the cultural arts coordinator for the Suffolk Art Gallery. “This year, we will not be able to have an in-person opening reception, but we will release a virtual awards announcement on March 6 at 5 p.m. If anyone is unable to visit the exhibit in person, we will also produce a video of the works on display that will be shared on the Suffolk Parks and Recreation social media pages.”
The juror for this exhibit was Carl Galie. Galie is a North Carolina-based instructor and award-winning photographer with two published books. This year, 53 photographers submitted 199 works, and 60 of those entries will be on display.
“We are very excited to be able to host this exhibit,” said Reavis.
To comply with guidelines, masks are required for entry, and stickers are displayed throughout the exhibit to maintain social distancing. The Suffolk Art Gallery is also running at partial capacity and is limited to 34 guests at a time. The gallery strongly encourages anyone who is feeling unwell or who has a fever to stay home. Regular cleanings take place throughout the building during business hours, and hand sanitizer is available for visitors. All exhibits at the Suffolk Art Gallery are free and open to the public, and visitors of all ages are welcome and encouraged to visit the gallery.
The Suffolk Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information about this and other programs offered by the Suffolk Art Gallery, call the gallery at 514-7284, the Parks & Recreation office at 514-7250 or visit www.suffolkva.us.
