Suffolk Police are investigating a vandalism incident that appeared to target a School Board member for her vote against returning students to school.
Suffolk Police say the incident happened about 1 a.m. Oct. 24, just hours after the board had voted during a special meeting. An unknown offender lit a 20-foot-long daisy chain of firecrackers across the yard, leaving a burn mark, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink.
The home in the Castlewood neighborhood off Respass Beach Road in North Suffolk belongs to School Board Vice Chairwoman Dr. Judith Brooks-Buck and her husband, Henry.
Klink stated that the victim told police she located a piece of paper later that morning that noted “send our kids back to school.”
Brooks-Buck declined to speak to the News-Herald about the incident after the police advised her not to, stating it could compromise the investigation, Brooks-Buck wrote in an email.
Klink said detectives are attempting to contact and speak with all other School Board members to determine if they have experienced any similar issues.
Klink said the investigation remains ongoing and confirmed there are other law enforcement agencies involved in addition to Suffolk Police Department, but would not say which ones. She also declined to release a copy of the full police report, citing the ongoing investigation.
