William and Mary’s Katie Murphy (Nansemond-Suffolk) won the championship flight consolation bracket final in the 84th Annual Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Women’s Amateur Championship in Danville on Friday.

Murphy was one of the top 32 golfers after the stroke-play round to open the tournament at Danville Golf Club (par 72, 5,714 yards), finishing tied for 28th going into the match-play rounds.

Murphy lost her first match, but proceeded to win four straight matches in the consolation bracket. Three of Murphy’s four victories came against higher-seeded opponents, including in Friday’s last match, a 20-hole victory for Murphy against sixth-seeded Kara Spence of Hampton. Spence is a recent graduate of Longwood where she played four seasons for the Lancer golf program.

Whitney Neuhauser, a Barboursville native and rising senior at the University of Virginia, won the state championship, defeating UVA teammate Lauren Greenlief in the championship match in 20 holes.

A rising junior at William and Mary, Murphy played for five years on NSA’s varsity golf team, was an All-Tidewater Conference golfer three times and won the Payton Memorial Invitational four times.

As a freshman for the Tribe, Murphy tied for 18th in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. This past season, Murphy placed 35th in the Colonial.
