Suffolk, Franklin, Isle of Wight and Surry counties will receive part of $2.6 million in statewide funding through the Emergency Management Performance Grant Program.
Suffolk will receive $21,781. Franklin will receive $16,595, and Isle of Wight and Surry will each receive $7,500, according to a recent news release from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
The money distributed through the federally funded, state-disbursed program is intended to support local governments with equipment acquisitions, training, construction and renovations to facilitate comprehensive emergency preparedness.
“We need to continue pursuing this type of funding as the number of disasters keeps increasing,” Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran said in the announcement. “This year has proven that we need to be as prepared as possible for the unexpected, and we will continue applying for programs and grants that allow us to build and enhance our capabilities.”
