Suffolk Transit is reminding the public to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state guidelines by limiting use of public transport to essential travel only, according to a city press release.

Suffolk Transit is an essential service for helping other essential workers get to work, as well as for people buying groceries and other necessities. Patrons are asked not to ride if they have any indication that they may have been exposed to COVID-19 or are experiencing any symptoms, such as fever, coughing or sneezing.

Those who need emergency transportation to a medical facility should call 911, the press release stated.

Suffolk Transit is sanitizing all buses and paratransit vehicles multiple times a day and disinfecting shared surfaces such as railings, handholds, stanchions, windows and the driver’s compartment.

Passengers are encouraged to wear a mask and gloves and to limit the amount of surfaces they touch. Social distancing on the bus and at bus stops is required, and passengers are not to sit directly behind the driver.

Rider safety guidelines are clearly posted on every vehicle, and passengers are required to adhere to them.

“We have gone to extreme lengths to make sure our drivers and passengers are safe while they are out on the roads,” said Transit Manager Maria Ptakowski. “Thank you to our passengers for following our rider safety guidelines. I’d also like to thank our exceptional Suffolk Transit team. Our drivers and office staff are fantastic, and we will continue to provide an outstanding service during this time.
