A weekend without taxes

In what many are calling a sluggish economy, residents of Virginia have an opportunity to shop on a weekend without state taxes – and make relatively quick work of many of their back-to-school shopping needs.
In the second of the state’s three tax-free shopping weekends, residents can purchase clothing and school-related items without state tax, receiving a five percent break at a time when a price cut is becoming more crucial.
The three-day sales tax holiday kicks off at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 and races through that first weekend of the month ending at midnight Sunday, Aug. 9.
During the holiday, purchases of qualifying school supplies, selling for $20 or less per item and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear listed at $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax.
But, while the list of those items available for the tax break is long, knowing what not is available is even more important.
While sandals, scarves, ear muffs and jeans are items that will be sold without state sales tax, other items like briefcases, cosmetics and wallets are not included.
In the coming weeks, retail outlets will begin advertising sales specials and fantastic offers available during this tax-free weekend. For retailers, this holiday is becoming an important part of the calendar, bringing in much-needed business.
And while we applaud our state elected officials for making this day – and two others like – available for residents of Virginia, we encourage everyone to make sure what is and what is not tax exempt.
