A line of severe weather is expected to cross Suffolk Monday morning and early afternoon, bringing with it strong winds and the possibility for tornadoes.

Eswar Iyer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, said the most likely timing for Suffolk is between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday.

“The main threat is going to be damaging winds,” Iyer said. “We’re expecting to see things like downed trees resulting in downed power lines, with the possibility of a brief tornado as well.”

The storms will track across the area from west to east, Iyer said. A strong cold front will be crossing the area later Monday, causing the severe weather ahead of it.

Even outside of the thunderstorms, there will be gusty winds up to 45 or 50 miles per hour, Iyer said.

Other hazards will be minimal. “This isn’t really a setup where we’re expecting a whole lot in the way of hail,” Iyer said. “And we’ve been fairly dry lately, so we’re not really concerned about flash flooding. The storms will be moving pretty quickly, so rain amounts will be held in check.”
