Tickets are on sale for the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club’s upcoming 44th annual oyster roast. The roast will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. March 18 at Stoney Landing on the Rose Farm, which is located in the 6000 block of Everets Road.
The roast was moved from April to March 18 because of uncertainty about being able to procure oysters in April. The club was advised of this by their supplier, Murray L. Nixon Fishery, of Edenton, N.C., according to Kirk Pretlow, co-chair for the Oyster Roast.
There will be a social hour from 3 to 4 p.m. for visitors to enjoy the beer truck, tea and other beverages. The banquet will then be held from 4 to 6 p.m., with 175 bushels of oysters to go with 120 gallons of the club’s signature clam chowder, Pretlow said.
Volunteers will cook the oysters on the grill and carry them to tables in their wheelbarrows. Patrons will enjoy freshly roasted oysters and delicious clam chowder at their tables, with plenty of cocktail sauce and even better company.
This year will be especially significant because the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year as of January, Pretlow said.
“It’s one of the first Ruritan events in Suffolk each year, and all of the money goes back into community things that are of importance to everyone,” Pretlow said.
Tickets are $37 in advance and $42 on the day of the event. Proceeds go to the club’s efforts to support local organizations like Boy and Girls Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels and Western Tidewater Free Clinic.
Tickets are available from any Chuckatuck Ruritan Club member, and also at the following businesses: Pretlow and Pretlow, 100 Bank St.; Saunders Supply, 5881 Godwin Blvd.; and ProMedia Video Services, 5501 Bennetts Pasture Road.
