The Warriors boys’ basketball team finished the season at 11-11 after a home loss to Western Branch High School Tuesday night.

It was senior night for the Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team. The Warriors took a 69-66 loss against a tough Bruins team. The Bruins got off to a hot start in the first quarter, shooting 60 percent for the quarter as the Warriors were down 27-11.

Nansemond River was able to bounce back in the second quarter, outscoring the Bruins 18-10. In the third quarter, Western Branch picked back up their hot shooting, as they shot 60 percent in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors were down as much as 20 points before clawing their way back and bringing the lead within four points, but Western Branch was able to hold on in the end.

“We just didn’t come out with the intense focus we needed,” Coach Ed Young said. “We didn’t execute at either end of the floor, and you just can’t do that against a team like them. The first and third quarters showed ourselves dig a hole too deep to dig out of, but we did bounce back as we were finally focused on defense and got some quick transition baskets. I’m proud of the guys for battling back, but that bad start hurt us.”

Justin Fatherly led the Warriors with 22 points, which gives him 1,190 for his career, with 560 coming on this season. He led Hampton Roads in scoring with 26.6 points per game. Myron Brown added 16 points and six rebounds. The Warriors fell just short of making the Class 5A playoffs, as the region takes ten teams, with the Warriors finishing 11th. All of their losses this season were to teams that were among the top six in their regions and are set to make possible state runs.

“Hopefully, we will be making that statement about us next season,” added Young.
